Epidermolysis bullous - Symptoms, causes and treatment

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of hereditary diseases that cause the skin to become brittle and blister easily. Blisters can result from minor injuries, exposure to hot weather, friction or scratching. In general, the blisters can be seen at birth. But in some cases, new blisters appear in adolescence or early adulthood.

The skin consists of three layers, namely the epidermis, dermis, and subcutis or hypodermis. The epidermis layer is the outermost layer of the skin, which is further divided into 5 sub-layers. Beneath it is the dermis, which is thicker than the epidermis. While the hypodermis layer is the lowest layer, which connects the skin layer with the underlying tissue.

Epidermolysis bullosa can cause abnormalities in the epidermis, dermis, or basement membrane (the part between the epidermis and the dermis).
