Pregnant women can actually do their normal activities as long as they are not too tired and get enough rest. However, there are some conditions that require pregnant women to take more rest, sometimes even have to lie in bed all day.
Actually, as long as a healthy pregnancy is lived, doctors will not limit pregnant women's activities, how come. Pregnant women can still carry out various activities, as long as they are not excessive.
However, if the doctor detects there are complications in pregnancy that can harm the pregnant woman or the little one in the womb, the doctor will recommend that pregnant women reduce their activities. If the condition is severe enough, pregnant women are even required to lie down a lot.
Conditions that require pregnant women to rest
The following are conditions that require pregnant women to get more rest:
1. Preeclampsia and eclampsia
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and swelling of the pregnant woman's body, especially the legs. If this condition is not treated immediately, it can develop into eclampsia.
Pregnant women with eclampsia will experience seizures accompanied by decreased consciousness. This condition requires immediate medical attention because it can threaten the life of both the mother and the fetus.
2. Vaginal bleeding
Vaginal bleeding that occurs in the first trimester is generally not something serious, although it still needs to be checked by a doctor. However, if bleeding occurs frequently, especially in the second and third trimesters, it could be a sign of pregnancy complications.
Vaginal bleeding that occurs frequently, in large amounts, or accompanied by abdominal pain can be a sign that a pregnant woman is about to have a miscarriage or premature labor.
3. Placental abnormalities
The placenta or placenta plays an important role in maintaining the health of the fetus. Through the placenta, the fetus can get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow and develop.
If the placenta is disturbed, the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus will also be disrupted. Some disorders or abnormalities that can occur in the placenta are:
- Placenta previa is a condition in which the placenta covers part or all of the birth canal.
- Placenta accreta, which is a condition in which the blood vessels of the placenta or part of the placenta grow too deep in the uterine wall.
- Placental abruption or placental abruption, which is a condition in which the placenta separates from the inner uterine wall before delivery takes place.
4. Cervical incompetence (weak cervix)
With increasing gestational age, the weight of the fetus will increase and press the cervix. If the cervix is weak, the pressure can cause the cervix to open before the fetus is ready to be delivered. Cervical incompetence or a weak cervix can cause premature birth or miscarriage.
5. History of miscarriage or premature birth
If pregnant women have had miscarriages or gave birth prematurely before, the doctor will recommend pregnant women to get more rest, because pregnant women have the possibility to experience it again in their current pregnancy.
The conditions above do require pregnant women to get more rest. However, it all comes back to the doctor's judgment. Some pregnant women may be prohibited from doing various activities, but others are still allowed to carry out activities as usual, but are slightly restricted.
If pregnant women are asked by the doctor to lie down a lot, so they don't get bored, they can do it you know fill the time by reading a book, watching a favorite movie, or just taking a leisurely walk at home. But before that, ask your doctor about the limits of activities that are still safe for pregnant women to do.
Also make sure that pregnant women regularly check with their obstetrician so that the health of pregnant women and their little ones in the womb can be monitored continuously. In addition, it is important to listen to signals from the pregnant woman's own body. When you feel tired, get some rest.
