Ciclopirox is a drug used to treat fungal nail infections. This drug is available in the form of a liquid that is applied to the nails (paint). Before and during ciclopirox use, infected nails should be treated and cut regularly.
Ciclopirox works by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, so that the growth and development of the fungus will be inhibited. To get optimal results, this drug should be used regularly.

Precautions Before Using Ciclopirox
Ciclopirox should not be used carelessly. Note the following points before using ciclopirox:
- Do not use ciclopirox if you are allergic to this drug.
- Do not place ciclopirox near fire or heat, and do not apply this medicine while smoking, as this medicine is flammable.
- Tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have had an organ transplant or have diabetes, HIV/AIDS, diabetic neuropathy, or a condition that causes a weakened immune system.
- Tell your doctor if you are taking certain medications, supplements, or herbal products.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy.
- Call your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction to any medication after using ciclopirox.
Dosage and Instructions for Use Ciclopirox
To treat fungal nail infections in adults and children over 12 years of age, apply ciclopirox liquid 2 times a day. Generally it takes about 6 months of treatment to see improvement in the condition of the nail.

Follow the doctor's recommendations and read the instructions for use listed on the ciclopirox package before using it. Apply this remedy regularly and evenly on the nails, under the nails, and some of the skin near the nails.
If you forget to use the drug, use it immediately if the time gap between the next use of the drug is not too close. When it is close, ignore and do not double the use of this nail polish in the next dose.
Wait up to 30 seconds for the medicine applied to the nails to dry. Do not let the medicine get in your eyes, mouth or nose. Use the drug according to the duration of use recommended by the doctor. Do not stop taking ciclopirox without consulting your doctor first.
During treatment with ciclopirox, you will be asked to trim your nails regularly. If you are in doubt about the correct way to trim your nails, ask your doctor.
This medicine is flammable, do not smoke or light a fire while using this medicine. Store the medicine in the package at room temperature. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, hot temperatures, and humid places. Keep medicine out of reach of children.
Interactions of Ciclopirox with Other Drugs
There is no known interaction effect that may occur if ciclopirox is used with other medicines. However, to prevent unwanted drug interactions, be sure to always tell your doctor if you want to take or use certain medicines at the same time as ciclopirox.
Side Effects and Dangers Ciclopirox
Although rare, there are some side effects that can appear after using ciclopirox, namely:
- Nails and the surrounding area feel dry
- Irritation and redness in the nail folds
- Burning pain on the skin
- Itchy skin
Check with your doctor if the side effects do not go away or get worse. Immediately see a doctor if you experience an allergic drug reaction which can be characterized by symptoms such as an itchy rash or difficulty breathing.
