Apart from osteoporosis, there are a number of rare bone diseases, including Paget's disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, bone metastases, and renal osteodystrophy. The following is an explanation of the disease and its causes.
The rate of bone growth is known to occur in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. This growth period needs to be supported by adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D and exercise so that bones are strong and not easily porous. The reason is, at the age of 20 years, bones tend to be more fragile and cause health problems in the bones.
Recognizing the Types of Bone Diseases That Are Classified as Rare
However, even though you have tried your best to protect your bones by meeting your nutritional needs and a good lifestyle, there are also bone diseases that can still attack you. Bone diseases of this type mostly attack because they are related to genetics, environment, and certain diseases suffered. Some of these types of bone diseases include:
- Disease Page
As a result of abnormalities in the regeneration process, the bones actually become weak and eventually experience deformities (deformities). A common symptom of this type of bone disease is bone pain. This pain usually occurs in the pelvic area and spine. When lying down, the pain in the bones is getting worse, aka more and more unbearable.
In many cases of Paget's disease, there are no symptoms, so the disease can only be diagnosed when a bone is fractured or broken or when you see a doctor. Therefore, the least that can be done is to see a doctor immediately when experiencing symptoms of bone pain or changes in the shape of the bones.
- Osteogenesis iperfectaOther name osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a disease of brittle bones. This condition is characterized by imperfect bone formation. The physical condition of patients with this disease can be seen in their bones which are brittle and easily cracked or broken. This type of bone disease usually has been present since birth, and occurs in children whose families have a history of similar diseases or genetics.
Most of these bone abnormalities are mild. When this brittle bone disease progresses to severe, it can lead to heart failure, spinal cord problems, permanent physical disability, or hearing loss.
Until now there is no treatment that can cure this bone disease. However, treatment efforts with drugs, physiotherapy, and special rehabilitation can help the sufferer to be able to carry out normal daily activities. In some cases, bone surgery is required to overcome the effects of bone damage in this bone disease.
- Metastasis
But in some cases, bone metastases may occur after a person underwent cancer treatment several years ago. Breast cancer and prostate cancer are types of cancer that often spread cancer cells.
This type of bone disease can cause pain and fractures. In general, cancer that has spread to the bones cannot be cured. In cancer conditions that can no longer be cured (stage 4 cancer), the treatment given is only intended to reduce pain. In this case, treatment is also done to relieve other symptoms due to bone metastases.
- Renal osteodystrophy
Be careful if this disease afflicts children whose bones are still developing because it will have serious consequences later in life. Part of the impact is the inhibition of bone growth and causes the sufferer to experience disability. The disability that occurs can be in the form of both legs bending inward or outward.
This type of bone deformity is known as renal rickets. One more impact of impaired bone growth that can be seen clearly is short stature in children.
Symptoms of this disease can be monitored from the growth of children with kidney disease, even before they are required to undergo dialysis. In contrast to adults, new symptoms appear after the patient underwent dialysis for several years.
The bone disease above is still not widely known, but at least now there is a brief description of the symptoms of this disease. One more thing to remember is that everyone is at risk for this disease. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor to get more accurate and complete information.
