The Importance of Learning Breathing Techniques Before Labor Arrives

Breathing properly during childbirth can provide many benefits.SOne of them is to reduce pain during childbirth. Therefore, before the time comes, first learn the right breathing techniques so you don't get confused when in the delivery room later.

In addition to helping reduce pain during labor, there are many benefits that you can get by practicing proper breathing techniques during childbirth, including maximizing the supply of oxygen for you and your baby, relaxing the muscles and calming the mind, and making delivery easier.

Step-LaWhat is labor breathing technique?

The following are breathing techniques that can be applied during labor:

1. Tinhale and exhale slowly

Take a deep breath through your nose and let your stomach bulge. After that, exhale through pursed lips (like whistling). Use your hands to gently press your stomach to let all the air out.

You can use this abdominal breathing technique in the early stages of labour, between contractions or during contractions. Do it casually while calming the mind.

2. Relax

Try to relax. As you take a breath, you can think of the word “ri”. As you exhale, think "leks". While doing this breath, try to stay calm and release any tension in your body and mind.

3. Counting

As you inhale and exhale, you can count them. For example, as you inhale, slowly count 1, 2, 3, 4. Then as you exhale, count 5, 6, 7, and 8.

4. Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth

Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. As you exhale, do it gently and slowly. You can exhale while making a sound like “uuuuhhh”.

5. Do it pant-pant blow

When contractions occur, apply a breathing technique called blowing pant. The way to do this is to inhale deeply through your nose, then exhale in two short exhales, and end with a long exhale.

This breathing technique may sound like “huu huu huuuuuuu”. Every 10 seconds, try to breathe 5-20 times. Breathe in this way until the contractions stop.

6. Take a breath in between straining

Entering the second stage of labour, you will begin to push your baby out. When the urge to push appears, start pushing. Do a few pushes in each contraction.

Between straining, take a few breaths. Try counting to five as you push, then take deep breaths. After that, just back to push.

Avoid holding your breath and straining for more than 5 seconds, as this can damage the pelvic floor. Another effect that can also occur due to pushing too long is the disruption of oxygen supply to the baby.

If you are pregnant, it's a good idea to find out the correct breathing technique during labor. Ask your doctor or midwife. If necessary, take a pregnancy exercise class to practice breathing techniques, so that you are ready for labor.
