Recognize 7 Danger Signs of Pregnancy to Watch Out for

Various complaints are often experienced by pregnant women. Although common, complaints during pregnancy can signal danger in pregnancy. Therefore, it is important for pregnant women to recognize the various danger signs during pregnancy so that they can be aware of them.

Hormonal changes and fetal development are one of the causes of complaints during pregnancy, such as feeling tired, nausea and vomiting, and constipation.

In addition to these complaints, there are several signs of a dangerous pregnancy that are important for pregnant women to know, so that treatment can be carried out by a doctor as soon as the signs appear.

Diverse Pregnancy Danger Signs

There are some signs of a dangerous pregnancy and pregnant women need to be aware of, in between:

1. Bleeding

Light bleeding without pain is common in early pregnancy. However, bleeding can be a danger sign of pregnancy or serious complications when accompanied by the following conditions:

  • Bleeding in the first trimester which is characterized by dark blood, is also accompanied by severe abdominal pain, cramps, and feeling like passing out. This can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy which can be life-threatening.
  • Heavy bleeding with severe abdominal pain in the early second trimester. This condition can be a sign of miscarriage.
  • Bleeding with abdominal pain in the third trimester, can be a symptom of placental abruption, which is a condition when the placenta separates from the uterine wall.
  • Bleeding that occurs suddenly without pain, can be a symptom of placenta previa or a placenta that is too low.
  • Heavy bleeding at less than 37 weeks of gestation, may be a sign of labor that causes the baby to be born prematurely.

2. Severe nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is normal, but can be a danger sign of pregnancy if it is not controlled, persists, and occurs frequently. This condition is also known as hyperemesis gravidarum.

Hyperemesis gravidarum can make pregnant women lose their appetite and can't even eat or drink anything. If left untreated, this condition can cause pregnant women and fetuses to become dehydrated and malnourished.

Frequent vomiting during pregnancy can also be a danger sign of pregnancy, such as:

  • Preeclampsia, if nausea and vomiting persists during the second half of pregnancy, pain under the ribs, and swelling of the face, hands, or feet
  • Food poisoning, if vomiting is accompanied by diarrhea
  • Kidney infection, if vomiting is accompanied by fever and pain in the lower back or around the genitals

3. Fever

Pregnant women are more susceptible to colds and flu. However, immediately contact a doctor if the body temperature is above 37.5°C, but does not show flu or cold symptoms and lasts more than 3 days. This can be one of the danger signs of pregnancy.

4. The fetus rarely moves

The fetus moves quite often, which is a sign that the fetus is growing normally. However, if the movement pattern changes, either stops or decreases, especially at 28 weeks of gestation, contact your doctor immediately to prevent the possibility of fetal distress.

5. Discharge from the vagina

If there is fluid seeping from the vagina at less than 37 weeks of gestation, this could indicate premature rupture of the membranes. It is possible that the fetus must be born prematurely.

However, it could be that the fluid that comes out is not amniotic fluid, but urine. This is due to pressure on the bladder as the uterus enlarges.

To determine whether the leaking fluid is amniotic fluid or urine, use litmus paper. If the color of the paper turns blue, it means amniotic fluid. If the color does not change, then what comes out is urine.

In addition, amniotic fluid can also be distinguished by its clear color and sometimes accompanied by blood and odorless, while urine is usually yellow and smelly.

6. Symptoms of preeklamsia

Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine. This condition usually occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy and can endanger the condition of the pregnant mother and fetus if not treated immediately.

Symptoms that can appear include middle or upper abdominal pain, sudden blurred or double vision, swollen hands and feet, severe headache that doesn't go away, vomiting, infrequent urination, and shortness of breath.

7. Contraction

Belly feeling tight and a little sore during pregnancy is not always dangerous. However, pregnant women need to be careful if this complaint appears after falling or being hit in the stomach, especially if the stomach feels very painful and is accompanied by seepage of fluid or blood.

In addition to knowing the various danger signs of pregnancy so that you can be aware of them, don't forget to check your pregnancy condition with your doctor regularly. Thus, treatment can be carried out early if an abnormality is detected in the condition of the pregnant woman or fetus.
