Dental anatomy is divided into two basic parts. First is the crown, the part of the tooth that you can see is white. Second is the root of the tooth, which you can't see.

Recognizing the Parts of the Teeth

Maybe all this time you only know the white part of the tooth that appears from the outside, but in more detail, the tooth consists of several layers or parts. Here are the parts of the tooth with their different roles:

  • Enamel

Enamel is the outermost part of the teeth and is the hardest and whitest. Enamel plays a role in protecting the vital tissue inside the teeth which is made of a mineral substance called calcium and phosphate.

  • dentin

The dentin layer is below the enamel layer. When the enamel is damaged, hot or cold temperatures can enter the teeth, causing tooth sensitivity or pain.

  • Pulp

The pulp is the softer part of the tooth anatomy. The pulp is found in the center and core of your tooth which contains blood vessels, nerves, and other soft tissues. This section is useful for providing nutrition and conveying sensation to your teeth.

  • cementum

The roots of the teeth can firmly bind the gums and jawbone because they are connected by a layer of connective tissue. This layer of connective tissue is called cementum. The final part of dental anatomy is the periodontal ligament, which is the tissue that helps hold the teeth firmly attached to the jaw.

Type-Jtype of tooth

In addition to recognizing the anatomy of the teeth, it is also important to understand which types of teeth have their respective shapes and functions. Here are the types of teeth you need to know:

  • incisors

The incisors consist of eight teeth which are divided into four at the top and four at the bottom. The incisors are at the front of the mouth which are useful for biting food and are usually the first teeth to appear in babies aged 6 months.

  • Canine tooth

Canines are sharp teeth that function in chewing and tearing food. Usually, the canines appear between the ages of 16-20 months with the upper canines appearing before the lower canines. However, in permanent teeth in adults, the order is reversed. The lower canines will appear before the upper, which grows around the age of 9 years.

  • Premolars

Premolars are teeth that are larger than canines and incisors. The function of the premolars is to chew and grind food into small pieces for easy swallowing.

  • Molars

Teeth include the largest and strongest teeth among other teeth. The molars are used for chewing and grinding food. Generally, adults have eight molars, which are divided into four on the top and four on the bottom.
