Skin infections are diseases caused by microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Skin infections can cause a variety of symptoms, from itching to sores that are accompanied by pain.
The skin has various important functions for the body. One of them is to protect the inside of the body from ultraviolet radiation, injury, and infection. Even so, the skin can also be infected.
Generally, skin infections occur more easily when the skin condition is not good, for example when the skin is dry and cracked or has wounds. In addition, skin infections are also more common in people with weakened immune systems, for example due to long-term use of corticosteroid drugs.
Causes and Symptoms of Skin Infections
Skin infections are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Some types of skin infections based on the cause are:
- Bacterial skin infections, such as boils and leprosy
- Viral skin infections, such as smallpox and warts
- Fungal skin infections, such as tinea versicolor and ringworm
- Skin infections caused by parasites, such as scabies (scabies) and head lice
Signs and symptoms that appear in skin infections depend on the type. However, in general, people with skin infections experience sores or rashes on the skin that can be accompanied by itching or pain.
Treatment and Prevention of Skin Infections
Minor skin infections can generally be treated with over-the-counter medications and self-care at home. If the complaint is classified as severe, treatment needs to be done by a doctor.
Skin infections can be prevented by simple ways, such as keeping the skin and clothes clean, changing clothes if sweating, staying away from people who are infected, and not sharing personal items with others.
